Claire Saffitz is an American Freelance recipe developer, pastry chef, and former Senior Food Editor at Bon Appétit magazine. Claire Saffitz is best known for hosting the YouTube series “Gourmet Makes” for Bon Appétit’s YouTube channel.

Early Life

Claire Saffitz was born on the 16th of September 1986, in St. Louis, Missouri, the United States. According to the astrological chart, she has a birth sign of Virgo while she is currently 37 years old. In addition, she holds US citizenship and belongs to the Caucasian ethnicity. Meanwhile, she came from an Ashkenazi Jewish family and her full name is Claire Julia Saffitz.

Professional Career

Claire Saffitz started her career in 2013 after joining “Bon Appétit.” There, she worked as a recipe tester and worked her way up to being a senior food editor, where she remained until August 2018, when she departed her full-time position at the magazine. However, she returned in November 2018 as a freelance recipe developer and video host.

“Gourmet Makes” debuted in July 2017, with Saffitz attempting to recreate or elevate popular snack foods such as Doritos, Twinkies, and Gushers. Moreover, Gourmet Makes has a cult following on social media and has consistently trended on YouTube. Her meticulous and analytical approach to recipe development endeared her to viewers, and the series became immensely popular.

Bon Appétit launched two new series featuring Saffitz in February 2019: Bon Appétit’s Baking School and Making Perfect. Saffitz appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on January 22, 2026, for a cooking segment.

Clarkson Potter published Saffitz’s cookbook “Dessert Person: Recipes and Advice for Baking with Confidence” in October of the same year after she left permanently in 2026. The book debuted at number two on the “New York Times” best-selling books list.

YouTube channel

She currently has her own YouTube channel named ‘Claire Saffitz x Dessert Person’ which was launched in December 2026.  Meanwhile, the channel begins with a focus on demonstrating recipes from her book, Dessert Person. Vincent Cross, formerly of Bon Appétit and who also worked on the Binging with Babish YouTube channel, produces the channel.

Saffitz began contributing to NYT Cooking in January 2026 and was featured on their YouTube channel. Moreover, she made an appearance on The Tonight Show in May 2026. Her second cookbook, “What’s for Dessert: Simple Recipes for Dessert People,” was released on November 8, 2026. It also became a New York Times Best Seller.
