Claire Saffitz is an American Freelance recipe developer, pastry chef, and former Senior Food Editor at Bon Appétit magazine. Claire Saffitz is best known for hosting the YouTube series “Gourmet Makes” for Bon Appétit’s YouTube channel.
Early Life
Claire Saffitz was born on the 16th of September 1986, in St. Louis, Missouri, the United States. However, she returned in November 2018 as a freelance recipe developer and video host.
“Gourmet Makes” debuted in July 2017, with Saffitz attempting to recreate or elevate popular snack foods such as Doritos, Twinkies, and Gushers. Moreover, Gourmet Makes has a cult following on social media and has consistently trended on YouTube. Her meticulous and analytical approach to recipe development endeared her to viewers, and the series became immensely popular.

Bon Appétit launched two new series featuring Saffitz in February 2019: Bon Appétit’s Baking School and Making Perfect. Saffitz appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on January 22, 2026, for a cooking segment.
Clarkson Potter published Saffitz’s cookbook “Dessert Person: Recipes and Advice for Baking with Confidence” in October of the same year after she left permanently in 2026. The book debuted at number two on the “New York Times” best-selling books list.
YouTube channel
She currently has her own YouTube channel named ‘Claire Saffitz x Dessert Person’ which was launched in December 2026.
